Karling Hamill has a thing for colour, and it’s apparent in her light-filled Melbourne Bungalow that’s struck the perfect balance between minimalism and whimsy. Instead of overly-saturated, chintzy colours, the home is strategically peppered with mint greens and blush hues that make it as stylish as it is inviting.

The Melbourne native now working in digital design space in Hong Kong approached her Australian home with one major intention in mind: to create “a tranquil space to relax in”, and it shows.

In a (very successful) effort to marry the simplicity of Scandinavian design with the unconventional aspects of Bohemian style, you’ll notice loads of texture and greenery throughout the sophisticated home. While neutral colours and woods play a huge role in the design of the space, pops of colour and playful accessories adorn the shelfie-ready surfaces.

She admits that going bold with colour can be tempting. “I feel I’d love to live with [bright colour palettes] for a little time but ultimately my ever-racing mind needs a tranquil space to relax in.”

“Don’t acquire too much at once. Slowly bring things that you love into your home and consider if they really add to your space."

Karling’s decorating style feels right in line with our minimal approach to design. “Don’t acquire too much at once,” she tells us on decorating a space. “Slowly bring things that you love into your home and consider if they really add to your space.”

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t blush seeing our leather chairs in her fresh space, like the repurposed blush Fenwick Dining Chair sitting in a corner of her living space. “I love everything Barnaby Lane,” Karling tells us. “The blush and tan chairs, the gorgeous teak armchair — these definitely made my heart beat a bit quicker and I was so glad to welcome them home!” The blush leather melts into the muted palette, and looks right at home in Karling’s living space. “The pieces are simple but elegant, yet warm from the earthy material and pale colours.”
